Hamid's wood turning workshop
The Hamid's workshop-boutique, where the woodturning courses are held , located in a fondouk of the medina of Marrakech, in which Hamid has been practicing and exhibiting since fifteen years.
The Fondouk is very old and organized in a conventional manner, with boutiques and wokshops on the ground floor arranged around a courtyard open to the sky, and a floor which is also installed various workshops. There are all sorts of trades and traditional crafts, and even a very old and large scale formerly used to weigh goods in the middle of the court. Now owned by an individual, the fondouk was completely renovated in 2007 and it is especially pleasant, even younger, and has not lost its ancestral charm.
Each morning, Hamid takes his only tool out in front of his workshop , a traditional Wood lathes called El Mkherta, and begins his painstaking work. Inside the workshop are exposed work: pieces of chess, sleeves skewers, furniture composed of famous moucharabiehs * and other turned wood items. As in all the boutiques turners are too many objects in cedar traditionally produced in the region of Essaouira.
Hamid is a local figure, full of nobility and pride. He likes to recall that day in March 2007, during which King Mohammed VI came in person to see the renovation of fondouk.
